Plans of the Subiaco garden

Subiaco Courtyard

Design Brief

The clients are a couple with no children. The house and interior finish was very contemporary and sophisticated and I wanted to create an outdoor space that was sympathetic to the architecture and extremely low maintenance.

A tall vertical water feature was created that dissected the deck as a dry rill at an angle creating interesting geometry. The unusual angles created deep angular garden beds which were sparsely planted with Lomandra tanika and mulched with white quartz gravel. A dracaena marginata was used as a sculptural feature. There is a low square platform which may be used to display artworks or as a day bed with cushions. There is a Pyrus ussuriensis to soften the landscape and lessen the impact of the 6m high walls on all sides.

This garden uses the geometry of the design, wall colour and texture to create interest and is not solely reliant on plants for its aesthetic. There is minimal water usage but it is still an inviting landscape which melds perfectly with the house.
